They used Israel as a tool. Israel held Egyptian land. Egypt wanted it back, to get it back they had to talk to the USA. The conditions were no more ties to the USSR and you get the Sinai back and we'll give to $1.3 pa. for your trouble. Thus it was done. the USSR has gone but the USA still pays. Why? If the current Egyptian admin falls the outlawed Muslim brotherhood, the most popular yet banned party, is waiting to pounce. Another fundamentalist state out of the USA's control would be formed. the US does not want that and thus props up Mubarak. I notice the author "William Fisher" served as a State Department and USAID consultant in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa. He lived in Cairo for several years I'm living in Cairo now, how this man can have lived there, been in the state dept, and yet be so mindblowingly ignorant of the very basics is beyond my comprehension.
