I'm curious, was it not the Community Reinvestment Act that helped foster the predatory lending practices you speak of? Or was Household merely a lone operator of predatory lending?

Given that the hidden camera and the charade of seeking help from an agency which sees as its primary function to HELP was a deception and with the backing of some Right wing groups or individuals, I can't help but wonder what would happen if these same Hidden cameras were used on the Halliburten and Blackwater govt contractors to get to the heart of how much they were stealing from us, the Taxpayers of America. We cannot get the main stream media to deal with these big issues, but a poorly done hidden camera interview that finds people acting poorly while there is no information on how many ACORN offices they were thrown out of speaks to the one sided Right wing Noise machine which drowns out enven a modicum of real news and debate. Don't be surprised we let Contractors who steal millions from us and give them more contracts while we "investigate"=(coverup) their misdeeds. They should be unfunded by our Congress, not the community organizers who do a service to our poor..

You opened my eyes about ACORN's power. Rove and his minions seek to destroy ACORN out of fear.

I had not heard of ACORN's campaign to help those screwed by Household Finance. The effort by ACORN was huge and good and right and I applaud you and your colleges for having the courage to face down our corporate plunderers (the Second Gilded Age is so appropriate).

Some people who comdemn ACORN do so against their own self-interests being in the demographic that might actually beneift from their services. I can't understand why ideology has them grasping at reasons to condemn. It would be almost funny if it weren't so sad.

Incoherent white rage aside, this essay reminded me that we ignore parts of our community at our peril. Because I have more education and make more money, I may feel very different from a victim of an exploitative loan in low-income Kentucky -- but as it turns out (and I lost my house early last year), I'm not.

We really are in this together. Whatever happens to inner-city or poor rural Americans -- whether it's drugs, or bankruptcy, or gun violence -- either came from my neighborhood in the first place or will show up there soon. We're just much less different than we think we are.

Thanks for the essay.

Does this mean Barack will be reprising his role as ACORN defense lawyer?

ACORN: Association of Criminals Obama Represented in the Nineties.

“I've been fighting alongside of Acorn on issues you care about my entire career [including child “services”, financial “services”, and “voter” registration?] Even before I was an elected official, when I ran Project Vote in Illinois, Acorn was smack dab in the middle of it, and we appreciate your work.” --Obama, 2007

To those who would defend the indefensible, please. It only throws your credibility after theirs. A short review the crimes ACORN casually abets:

"VOTER" REGISTRATION: Could have swayed national and certainly local elections in the past, people may be in office who do should not be there. Voter fraud is political oppression.

FINANCIAL "SERVICES": Imagine how much tax and mortgage fraud they have helped (encouraged!) people to commit. Did you see how blithe and confident they were in those videos? Plus--Subprime Mortgage Fraud! Subprime Mortgage Fraud!--this group likely contributed directly to the meltdown.

CHILD "SERVICES": The sickness and gravity of this needs no explanation. Even flirting with this crime speaks to a lowness and vileness rampant in this group that I can hardly bring myself to think about. You’re a sorry person to excuse the many incidences of counseling on the finer points of how to enslave illegal immigrant kids as sex workers.
