Holder: Location For 9/11 Trial Expected ‘Relatively Soon,’ NYC Still An Option

With attempted terrorist Najibullah Zazi pleading guilty to three criminal charges before a federal judge in New York, Attorney General Eric Holder says that Zazi’s case proves that the US Justice Department can effectively prosecute terrorists. And he noted during a news conference Monday following the guilty plea that the trial of self-professed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-conspirators could still be held in New York City, despite widespread opposition from Republicans and Democrats.

Torture Whitewash: How “Professional Misconduct” Became “Poor Judgment” in the OPR Report

The report largely focuses on two memos dated August 1, 2002, and a third dated March 14, 2003. Widely known as the “torture memos,” these notorious documents sought to redefine torture so that it could be used by the CIA (and by the US military in the March 2003 memo), and the report concludes that the primary author of the memos, John Yoo, an OLC lawyer who is now a law professor at Boalt Hall, the University of California’s School of Law in Berkeley, and the senior official who signed the August 2002 memos, Assistant Attorney General Jay S. Bybee, who is now a judge in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, were guilty of “professional misconduct.”

On the heels of a 39% rate hike on premiums, protesters took to the streets outside Anthem Blue Cross’ downtown Los Angeles office to voice their disapproval–as well as galvanize the Senate into finishing health care reform with a public option. Holland Has Had Enough: US Killing of Afghan Civilians Continues

Holland Has Had Enough: US Killing of Afghan Civilians Continues

While the slaughter goes on in this pointless display of Marine power, civilians have been dying at American hands elsewhere in Afghanistan. On Thursday a US airstrike allegedly targeting “insurgents” ended up hitting and killing seven Afghani policemen. And yesterday, another airstrike, this time on a “convoy” of three vehicles, killed an astonishing 33 civilians and injured 12 more–and given the vicious nature of American weaponry, it’s a fair bet that many of those who were injured will end up dying of their wounds too.

As Police Launch New Torture Inquiry, It’s Time For Shaker Aamer To Come Home from Guantanamo

As Police Launch New Torture Inquiry, It’s Time For Shaker Aamer To Come Home from Guantanamo

On Friday, it emerged in a UK court that the Metropolitan Police is investigating allegations that MI5 was complicit in the torture, in US custody in Afghanistan, of Shaker Aamer, the last British resident still held at Guantánamo. In the High Court, Richard Hermer QC, counsel for Aamer, told Mr. Justice Sullivan that Met officers had visited his solicitors, Birnberg Peirce, on Wednesday. “It became apparent they are now investigating allegations raised by Mr. Aamer into the alleged complicity of the UK security service in his mistreatment,” he said, adding that the police had made an application to the court “for release of relevant documents” relating to Aamer’s allegations that the confessions he made in US custody were obtained through torture.

Part IV: The Financial Coup d’Etat: The Economic Elite Vs. The People of the USA

Ever since the days of Henry Ford, the Economic Elite have needed a thriving US middle class to increase growth and profits, but now, in the global economy, they view the US middle class as obsolete. They increasingly look globally for profits and they would rather pay cheap labor in countries like China and India.

Yoo, Bybee, And Disinformation

Yoo, Bybee, And Disinformation

Everything you’re reading about torture lawyers John Yoo and Jay Bybee getting off the hook is wrong. They are not torture lawyers, they are not off the hook, there never was any hook, they may not be lawyers for long, impeachment and indictment are on the agenda, and you have a role to play.

Calling these men “torture lawyers” is dramatically dumber than labeling Al Capone a tax cheat. These are people who provided “legal” cover for aggressive wars, who put down in documents treated as secret “laws” that any president can launch any aggressive war at his whim, without regard to domestic or international law, Congress, the Supreme Court, you, me, or morality.

Rampage in Central Philadelphia Shows the Potential of Social Media

City leaders and the downtown business community in Philadelphia are wringing their hands and calling for “tough action” against a horde of some 150 high school kids from eight of the city’s decrepit and failing high schools who rampaged late Tuesday afternoon through the Center City district’s shops, from the Gallery mall at 10th Street to Macy’s near City Hall, frightening tourists and suburban shoppers, and knocking over shopping displays.

ICE Uses Threats of Deportation to Produce Terrorism ‘Intel’

But now apparently the campaign to find terrorist boogie-men has come home with a vengeance. Just ask Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) informants Emilio and Analia Maya of Saugerties, New York. According to a fascinating Associated Press report by Helen O’Neill, on November 17, 2009, Emilio was surrounded by nine ICE officers in flak jackets with guns.

DOJ, FBI Conclude Probe Into 2001 Anthrax Attacks

Earlier today, representatives of the FBI and Justice Department provided a 92-page investigative summary along with attachments to victims of the attacks, relatives of the victims and appropriate committees of Congress. This document sets forth a summary of the evidence developed in the “Amerithrax” investigation, the largest investigation into a bio-weapons attack in U.S. history. As disclosed previously, the Amerithrax investigation found that the late Dr. Bruce Ivins acted alone in planning and executing these attacks.
