Lies, Damn Lies, And The Media

Lies, Damn Lies, And The Media

ACORN is shutting down because of a fraudulent video pimped by the corporate media. U.S. forces in Afghanistan have heroically laid seige to and conquered a fictional city, helping build the case for further escalation. A cable news channel has created a right-wing mass movement by pretending it already existed.

Three Guantanamo Detainees Released to Georgia

Three Guantanamo Detainees Released to Georgia

The Department of Justice today announced that three detainees have been transferred from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the custody and control of Georgia. As directed by the President’s January 22, 2009 Executive Order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of these cases. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, the detainees were approved for transfer by unanimous consent among all the agencies involved in the Task Force. In accordance with Congressionally-mandated reporting requirements, the Administration informed Congress of its intent to transfer these detainees at least 15 days before their transfer.

‘Death Obsessed’ Texas Set to Execute Another Innocent Man Wednesday

‘Death Obsessed’ Texas Set to Execute Another Innocent Man Wednesday

The bloody-minded, death-obsessed state of Texas, which has already demonstrably executed at least one innocent man, Cameron Todd Willingham (who was falsely accused and ultimately killed by the state for the alleged arson “murder” of his two little children when in fact they’d died because of a fire caused by an electrical fault), may be about to execute yet another innocent man. This time it’s Hank Skinner, 47, a man who has spent 16 years on the state’s busy death row protesting his innocence in the 1993 New Year’s Eve murder of his girlfriend, Twila Busby, and her two sons, aged 20 and 22.

Seven Years Of War In Iraq: Still Based on Dick Cheney’s Torture and Lies

Seven Years Of War In Iraq: Still Based on Dick Cheney’s Torture and Lies

Last Friday marked the seventh anniversary of the illegal invasion of Iraq, but by now, it seems, the American people have become used to living in a state of perpetual war, even though that war was based on torture and lies. Protestors rallied across the country on Saturday, but the anti-war impetus of the Bush years has not been regained, as I discovered to my sorrow during a brief US tour in November, when I showed the new documentary film, “Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo” (directed by Polly Nash and myself) in New York, Washington D.C., and the Bay Area.

‘A Breed Apart:’ In Memory of Stewart Udall

‘A Breed Apart:’ In Memory of Stewart Udall

I cannot claim to be an expert on Stewart Udall, the Arizona Congressman, conservationist, supporter of environmentalist Casandra Rachel Carson, and interior secretary under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson who died this week at the age of 90. I can say, from personal experience, though, that he was a breed apart from the money-grubbing, corporate ass-kissing, Washington cocktail circuit, elitist pigs who have headed up federal government departments in the days and years since Richard Nixon, in 1969, inaugurated the “Imperial Presidency.”

ACLU’s Wizner: ‘There’s Nothing Military About Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’

ACLU’s Wizner: ‘There’s Nothing Military About Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’

“I really do think that it plays into the narrative of people like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, to bring them before a military court and to have them brought on trial, to have military defense lawyers, military prosecutors, military jury, and a military judge. There’s nothing military about Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. That’s not a justice system, that’s a detention system.”

ACLU’s Ben Wizner: Military Commissions ‘An Enormous Practical Failure’

ACLU’s Ben Wizner: Military Commissions ‘An Enormous Practical Failure’

The first thing that needs to be said about military commissions – whatever you think about whether they are a fair system of justice – is that they’ve been an enormous practical failure – that in all the years since they were rolled out, only three convictions have been obtained – two of them under pretty unusual circumstances. The first was the guilty plea of David Hicks, which was really worked out as a negotiation between the Australian Prime Minister and Dick Cheney, which resulted in David Hicks serving nine months in an Australian jail.

John Yoo: A President Can Nuke the United States

John Yoo: A President Can Nuke the United States

I had the opportunity to ask war lawyer John Yoo a couple of questions on Friday. The situation was not ideal, with someone else holding the microphone and deferring to the witness, and other people heckling, and other people shouting at the hecklers. Nonetheless . . .

Tea Partiers Admit They Are Ignorant, Racist At DC Health Care Protest

Tea Partiers Admit They Are Ignorant, Racist At DC Health Care Protest

On March 16, Tea Partiers from around the country gathered (in disappointing numbers) in front of the Capitol building for their final protest against health care reform. Also in town, appropriately, was Barnum & Bailey’s actual circus. The protesters voiced their usual conspiratorial concerns about healthcare reform: that it was a government takeover and more […]

John Yoo Celebrates Sunshine Week

Sunshine Week, according to its website, is “a national initiative to open a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. The University of Virginia here in Charlottesville is doing its part by hosting book tour stops for the chief author of the worst secret laws ever established. John Yoo will be speaking at the Miller Center and at an event hosted by the Federalist Society. Yoo will be speaking in support of unlimited presidential power, including the power to create secret laws.
