Armed Protestor at Healthcare Townhall: ‘We Will Forcefully Resist’

This disturbing video was produced by an extremist libertarian organization called Freedom’s Phoenix and another group that goes by 4409. The individuals attended President’s Barack Obama’s townhall event on healthcare in Phoenix Monday carrying assault rifles and handguns. The individual who interviewed one of the armed townhall attendees is Ernest Hancock, an online radio host who was himself armed with a 9mm handgun. [Update 08/19/09 22:243 One of TPR’s readers, MrC, noted in the comments that 4409 is not a “group,” rather 4409 is, MrC says:

the YouTube alias of Jason Shelton, the person who made the video. He is a member of Freedoms Phoenix and other organizations at the far fringe (which is saying something) of the Ron Paul movement.

CNN’s Rick Sanchez interviewed Hancock, which was posted on Freedom’s Phoenix website. Here’s a portion of that interview, as excerpted by Freedom’s Phoenix:

Sanchez: Many of you were shocked when you saw an image for the first time a video during an Obama demonstration where a well dressed black American man who had not only a AR-15 strapped to his shoulder and 9 millimeter Glock in a holster on his hip. There is his picture. This was an event in Phoenix, Arizona, he was right outside where President Obama was speaking. This American man was outside with about 12 other demonstrators who were also packing a loaded weapons near the president.

In this video he is being interviewed by Ernest Hancock who is the publisher of an online news web portal and has a internet radio show called “Declare Your Independence” with Ernest Hancock.

Hancock: I was there and I interviewed the man named Chris, there at the demonstration. I also interviewed him for 2 hours on my show “Declare Your Independence” this morning. I am also broadcast on, where a lot of people heard it. [Plays clip of the interview filmed by Hancock.]

Sanchez: A lot of levity there do you know him?

Hancock: Yes, I have known Chris for over 2 years. He has been a part of the Lovelution that swept the county around Dr. Ron Paul’s Presidential campaign. It all started in Arizona, I was the one who came up with the Revolution Love logo”

Hancock, however, is not just a gun-toting radio host. According to a report published by Talking Points Memo:

Ernest Hancock, the online radio host who staged an interview with an assault rifle-wielding cohort at the Obama event in Arizona yesterday — and was himself armed with a 9 millimeter pistol — was a vocal supporter and friend of right-wing anti-government militia members who were convicted of conspiracy and weapons charges in the 90s.

And in an interview today with TPMmuckraker, Hancock said he still believes the Viper Militia case was “manufactured” by the same government that manufactured Waco and lied to its people about 9/11.

The federal government initially accused the Arizona Viper Militia of plotting to blow up federal buildings, which the twelve-member group cased on videotape.

In July 1996, after a grand jury indicted the suspects, federal agents “seized about 90 high-powered rifles and hundreds of pounds of a bomb-making compound from the shabby bungalow of a man whom officials identified as the ordnance specialist of a local paramilitary group,” the New York Times reported at the time.

By the time these guys realize how much “water” the Tree of Liberty needs, most will be in hiding, rounded-up, or weeping for a good doctor to pull the bullets out of their sad-ass bodies in order to patch them up. Gun rubbers, it’s all about gun rubbing and machismo, health care for all … not until they need it.

“Taxation is theft.” With a logic like that, who needs a STOP sign, or a road for that matter? We’re all roadkill to these types …

soooooooo- we have some home grown looney terrorists to contend with.. What does Ron Paul say?

    love and semi automatic guns?
(Where is Freud when you really need him)

    Declare your independence from sanity?

Can’t post my name this time, they are toooooooooooo scary!

He is a peaceful, law-abiding demonstrator. Much less lethal than government – imposed health care (just wait until you are 60 and need intensive care – oops, sorry you do not qualify), continuous government sponsored social programs designed to keep people destitute and uneducated. I see that it is ok to be crazy and violent (called a social protester) but not calm, sane, law-abiding but armed. People need to think and quit basing their beleifs in emotionalism, or a need to be taken care of.

  5. Thank you for pointing that out MrC. Will update the story and note your comment.

Is this gun stuff a Southern thing? I don’t get it.

now, you look at them closely,
dont you realize if you bring a weapon,
any kind of weapon, whether it be a stick, a club, a knive, or a gun,
    to a public meeting,
would you not think of it as being a threat?
I really think you should think about other people, for a change,
    because accidents do happen,
whether it be on purpose or not,
guns are in fact dangerous. how would you feel, if this weapon disharged, or fired into the crowd, and a small child is dead? how would you feel afterward?
think about the consequences, and things that could happen, and stay safe.

What a bunch of idiots, we have a Usurper for President that launched his political career in Bill Ayers living room (you know, he blew up the Pentegon and other things) and they want to talk about this radio host. How’s that HOPE & CHANGE working for you, RETARDS!!!!!!!!!

    to anonomously….
it’s not the licensed, back-ground checked, citizens with guns you have to worry about. those accidents are less than 1% of all deaths.
it’s the criminals, or imbalanced, not-licensed people that cause 99% of the dead.
We can’t ‘stay safe’ if the sicko’s have the guns, and the rest of us don’t. Look at the Columbine high school shootings. If 1 teacher had a gun, and took that kid out, all the OTHER kids would be alive and healthy and safe. Instead of DEAD.

Just one question for all the liberals out there who are idolizing the socialist ideal. Have any of you EVER visited socialist countries at the street level? I don’t mean ” on a backroads biking trip, drinking wine and staying in 5 star hotels”. I mean in the STREET of the downtown areas, talking to locals? Of course not. Socialism (& socialized medicine) does not work – go check out VZ and Chavez, Costa Rica, Spain, England. Or AUSTRALIA -(where the guns were taken away from citizens (but of course not criminals) and violent crimes have soared in the past year). If you had visited a place like Venezuela and REALLY understood what’s going on, like my biotech friend who moved there, you’d run back to the US so fast and kiss its capitalist, republic, constitution & bill of rights ! Why do you think everyone is trying to come live in to the US? For opporutinity to work hard, be a success, and have freedom. Those of us supporting freedom, etc, are not the extreme fringe. We are fighting to keep the freedom we already have. You are the extreme fringe, trying to take those freedoms away and turn us into a socialist nation. Why don’t you just move to socialist Venezuela – where your kids can’t play outside, you can’t walk or jog, and your yard is ringed with barbed wire on top of 8′ walls, security systems, & armed guards? Utopia.

I don’t want to make our country a socialist country… I and the MAJORITY of voters who elected the president WANT HEALTHCARE!! I’ve been to other countries with elected officails and participate in the democratic process and they have healthcare and it works. You would not believe the price gouging the drug companies get away with here. What do you need an assault rifle at a healthcare forum anyway?? I’d understand if the forum was about the 2nd amendment, but it was about healthcare. I got a question, where was all the fury, the guns and protest when we allowed the last president to drag us into an unjustified war where a few thousand of our fellow americans never came back from? and tens of thousand are maimed and disabled for the rest of there lives? Now everybody wants to protest healthcare??? We are thought to be the most powerful country in the world and we are ranked 35 in the world as far as healthcare; number 36 is Somalia. How can we be #1 and we don’t take care of our own citizens (Hurricane Katina) I believe in democracy, I believe in the constitution, I believe in America, but we need healthcare.

  12. Acclamation says:

I love how the media portrays people who stand up for the constitution and the bill of rights as right-wing domestic terrorists. I dont care if the rally was for school safety, the fact of the matter is that guns and the right to bear our are (still) constitutionally protected rights, and people who elect to put those rights to use, are NOT committing a crime. Did the president get shot? NO. just because one has the ability and the RIGHT to use and have something that COULD be dangerous in the wrong hands, does not mean they will or intent to cause harm. Guns are machines controlled by the gun owner. JUST LIKE CARS. Accidents happen. Guns are not the enemy. LOSS OF OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES is the problem. oh and about healthcare.. look how “well” theyve done with our tax money, and social security. look at fema’s crappy logistics and lack of organization at hurricane Katrina, and tell me you want uncle sam to be in charge of your healtcare. No Thank You.

  13. The sad truth is money is spent on advertising and not on treating sick folks. Same with all the high priced ads for drugs. If all the waste and excesses in health care were used to treat folks the cost could go down and maybe every one could have some kind of insurance coverage. The power companies do not advertise yet I have electricity. Doctors prescribe medications so why is all the ads necessary. Educate the Doctors and put the rest back into new drug development or send dividends to their stock holders.

Historically, both the Liberal and the Conservative positions were much closer to a Libertarian viewpoint. In fact, the fairly recent formation of the Libertarian movement is a good indicator of this. It is the loss of their fundamentals by these two dominant viewpoints and the tendency toward the extreme, rather than the commonly held misconception that these viewpoints are "moderate", that have helped substantiate the Libertarian position. In fact, the early founders of Libertarian thought had influences from both the Conservative and Liberal leanings.

So libertarianism isn't extremist at all, it is actually MODERATE. Libertarianism sits where our constitution sits, in the middle of the spectrum with government having a medium amount of power.
