A strong case can be made that much of Dick Cheney's character is influenced by an undercurrent of death anxiety. Early on in his life, there was a great deal of reckless, death-defying behavior. Eventually he discovered power and the illusion of immortality that power confers. This occurs against a backdrop of serious health problems, a series of heart attacks that must have left Mr. Cheney feeling like a ticking time bomb at the level of unconscious perception. His very aggressive power-centered interpersonal style, his endorsement and promotion of dark, murderous methods to combat terrorism and his insistence on staying in the public eye after leaving office are consistent with a man chasing an illusion of personal immortality.

"Perhaps the closest Dick Cheney has come being The Man was on 9/11. He seemed to take charge.... made the call to shoot down any further airliners."

Inaccurate.

He actually gave the order to "stand down" (according to testimony given by the, then, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta):
