Has anyone done a study on the increasing "Appalachianization" [sp?] of the area. I spent summers there forty years ago. I went back there last summer for a couple of weeks and the accents had changed to cracker south [in the grandchildren] rather than northern ethnic [40ish and up]. In the 60s stock car racing would never have been popular as a "sport" now it's everywhere. It's like the accent has flowed north along the mountain chain from upper Georgia. It was disconcerting to say the least. And the change was from locally brewed beers, like Kaiers to Bud. ugh!
