Palin Backed End-of-Life Counseling As Alaska Governor

ThinkProgress dug into the Alaska state archives and pulled out this gem that clearly shows Palin to be a hypocrite of the highest order:

In recent weeks, right-wing groups have been pushing the myth that health care reform will somehow kill seniors. One of the most high profile voices pushing this lie has been Sarah Palin, who claimed President Obama will institute bureaucratic “death panels.” Today, again on her Facebook page, she continued the attack.

However, on April 16th 2008, then Gov. Sarah Palin endorsed some of the same end of life counseling she now decries as a form of euthanasia. In a proclamation announcing “Healthcare Decisions Day,” Palin urged public facilities to provide better information about advance directives, and made it clear that it is critical for seniors to be informed of such options:

The proclamation states:

WHEREAS, Healthcare Decisions Day is designed to raise public awareness of the need to plan ahead for healthcare decisions, related to end of life care and medical decision-making whenever patients are unable to speak for themselves and to encourage the specific use of advance directives to communicate these important healthcare decisions. [...]

WHEREAS, one of the principal goals of Healthcare Decisions Day is to encourage hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, continuing care retirement communities, and hospices to participate in a statewide effort to provide clear and consistent information to the public about advance directives, as well as to encourage medical professionals and lawyers to volunteer their time and efforts to improve public knowledge and increase the number of Alaska’s citizens with advance directives.

WHEREAS, the Foundation for End of Life Care in Juneau, Alaska, and other organizations throughout the United States have endorsed this event and are committed to educating the public about the importance of discussing healthcare choices and executing advance directives.

Pali’s support for end-of-life counseling demonstrates that her criticisms about President Obama’s healthcare reform bill have more to do with “political fear-mongering” than facts, ThinkProgress noted.

Additionally, Gingrich aslo publicly supported endorsed end of life counseling.

You people are morons. There is a BIG difference between “end of life couseling” and advanced directives. I have an advanced directive and I’ve had it for 12 years. I also have powers of attorney for both medical and financial. Everyone needs to have them. End of life counseling comes when the patient is older, usually near the end of life, (WOW…must be where the name comes from, eh?,) and will be geared toward letting the patient have no medical procedures to maintain life. Make them comfortable, as long as it does not cost too much, and let them die. So much for Intrepid New Journalism. If you want to be a service to the public, at least get the facts correct first. (Don’t Google, do real research!)

Kaylynn, don’t be foolish. Advanced Directives are the same thing, no matter when in your life you do them. The Bill provides this sort of counseling for Medicare recipients so that the session is paid for (previously not covered by Medicare). Most private insurance providers do cover it (mine does and I have insurance thru the Govt) I’ve worked in healthcare both in critical care and geriatric care for many years. There are a range of tools for planning that fall under the “Advanced Directives” from a Will all the way to a DNR. These tools can be put in place at any time during one’s life. This provision of the Bill affords the same right that most all of us have now, to those on Medicare. What has happened here is that the hate mongers have attached the terminology “end of life” planning (it’s Medicare for christ sake – you have to be over 65!!!) to mean “ending your life.” And that could not be farther from the Truth.

You need to turn off Fox News.

  5. diane carder says:

Pixie you need to TURN ON FOX news. Medicare is NOT just for those 65 and older either, it also includes the disabled. and just because your 65 does not mean you need end of life counciling> pixie educate yourself so you truely know what you are promoting. You may not like it.

WHEREAS, as a result of April 16, 2008, being recognized as Healthcare Decisions Day in Alaska, more citizens will have conversations about their healthcare decisions; more citizens will execute advance directives to make their wishes known; and fewer families and healthcare providers will have to struggle with making difficult healthcare decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the state of Alaska, do hereby proclaim April 16, 2008, as:

Healthcare Decisions Day in Alaska, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

    Dated: April 16, 2008

  8. thank you so much, Admin! That does help and the story will be updated.

  9. SP Biloxi says:

And to add to Palin’s hypocrisy, GOP supported ‘death panels’ in 2003. They were for ‘death panel’ before now being against it. I posted this on my Twitter and blog.

    http://justiceleague00.blogspot.com/2009/08/gop-supported-death-panels-in-2003.html

On a side note: Sen. Charles Grassley voted yea on this bill.

  10. Steve Roberts says:

May I add, that this entire controversy arose from an amendment added to the Senate version of the health care reform bill. That amendment was introduced by Republican Senator Johnny Isakson.

So for anyone, particularily ex-Gov. Palin, to refer to “Obama Death Panels” is political posturing of the worst kind – the kind that doesn’t even make any sense.

  11. 2sayf says:

The right wing media outlets and talking heads like Palin have tainted the health care debate. There should be higher standards for reporting.
