The right wing media outlets and talking heads like Palin have tainted the health care debate. There should be higher standards for reporting.

May I add, that this entire controversy arose from an amendment added to the Senate version of the health care reform bill. That amendment was introduced by Republican Senator Johnny Isakson.

So for anyone, particularily ex-Gov. Palin, to refer to "Obama Death Panels" is political posturing of the worst kind - the kind that doesn't even make any sense.

And to add to Palin's hypocrisy, GOP supported 'death panels' in 2003. They were for 'death panel' before now being against it. I posted this on my Twitter and blog.

On a side note: Sen. Charles Grassley voted yea on this bill.

WHEREAS, as a result of April 16, 2008, being recognized as Healthcare Decisions Day in Alaska, more citizens will have conversations about their healthcare decisions; more citizens will execute advance directives to make their wishes known; and fewer families and healthcare providers will have to struggle with making difficult healthcare decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the state of Alaska, do hereby proclaim April 16, 2008, as:

Healthcare Decisions Day in Alaska, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

Dated: April 16, 2008

Kaylynn, don't be foolish. Advanced Directives are the same thing, no matter when in your life you do them. The Bill provides this sort of counseling for Medicare recipients so that the session is paid for (previously not covered by Medicare). Most private insurance providers do cover it (mine does and I have insurance thru the Govt) I've worked in healthcare both in critical care and geriatric care for many years. There are a range of tools for planning that fall under the "Advanced Directives" from a Will all the way to a DNR. These tools can be put in place at any time during one's life. This provision of the Bill affords the same right that most all of us have now, to those on Medicare. What has happened here is that the hate mongers have attached the terminology "end of life" planning (it's Medicare for christ sake - you have to be over 65!!!) to mean "ending your life." And that could not be farther from the Truth.

You people are morons. There is a BIG difference between "end of life couseling" and advanced directives. I have an advanced directive and I've had it for 12 years. I also have powers of attorney for both medical and financial. Everyone needs to have them. End of life counseling comes when the patient is older, usually near the end of life, (WOW...must be where the name comes from, eh?,) and will be geared toward letting the patient have no medical procedures to maintain life. Make them comfortable, as long as it does not cost too much, and let them die. So much for Intrepid New Journalism. If you want to be a service to the public, at least get the facts correct first. (Don't Google, do real research!)
