For all of you out there who only have the one-sided media angle… yes, you are intitled to verbally fry COL Young. At least do it for the right reason. You see, I served with him at Kandahar base, under his command and I was in the unit when the comment was made about the slaves. What they don’t tell you is that the comment (which was taken way out of context) was made 8 months prior to the alligation and the only reason the commander being relieved brought it up was because he was a sorry ass commander that was being hemmed up for improper relationships in the first place. Did I think COL Young was too forward with his religious views in uniform,…yes. Is he a man of high moral character, a man who believes that christian values should be at the forefront of the fight… yes. Well certainly lets crucify that guy for standing up for something. Granted this is my opinion, but I was there when this happenned and the guy was a great commander who genuinly cared about his troops. If the only thing they can come up with through his entire career is this one comment, used by an idiot to try to cover his own mistakes, then I challenge any of you to put on a uniform, walk in his boots for the past thirty years as a soldier and tell people you’re a christian while conducting combat operations in those countries. You’re a bunch of arm-chair quarterbacks who weren’t there and COL Young is at least out there trying to make a difference.

It’s unforunate that the previous commenters failed to see the larger cultural implication behind Col. Young’s remark; that it is only a brief glimpse of the massive and influential American religious movement.

They’re quick to make excuses for the guy, assert the sources are wrong, or claim that one can’t really know what he meant – as if aspeaker should not be expected to consider the effect their remark may have on those who hear it? I wonder how our commenter friends managed to discover *what really happened* here?

Their claims conveniently explain away the horrors behind his remark, don’t they? Thanks for the good piece.

Gah, you’re as bad as fox news, did it even occur to you to consider his remarks from his perspective?

Obviously it was a tasteless choice of words, but even an uncharitable reading comes off as “slavery is bad, but the Christian religion is very good, from a utilitarian perspective it was a net good.” It was a statement about religion not race.

I’m African American, and I think the President and the left has enough high level stuff to worry about than the opinions of a Colonel. Yeah, this Young guy is a jackass. But if his superiors scare him into keeping his opinions to himself, then at least the US can get their return on the money and energy put into his training as an officer. It sucks for the people working under him, but I don’t see this guy as a threat, we’ve got bigger fish to fry.
