The remarks were:
------------------------
For the record, back in 2001, the Navy denied using “coercion” on Daniel King. Today, Dr. Gelles is no long working for the Navy, but works as a consultant and writer. He was interviewed in January 2009 by Foreign Policy about interrogation issues and his experience at Guantanamo. Both Dr. Gelles and Dr. Behnke were contacted by email and offered an opportunity to comment for this article. Neither replied.
-------------------------

Did you honestly think that either would reply?
.
Both of them exhibit the characteristics of sociopaths, lacking any kind of remorse for their acts, not caring a whit about their victims, and treating everyone else as expendable in their quest for fame.

Thanks for this. As a psychology grad school drop out, I've been trying to call attention to a process of managing electorates I've been calling myth-jacking.

Facts don't move electorates; myths do.

This is absolutely crucial: 'Myth' is not synonymous with 'lie;' a myth is a metaphorical image of the composition and functioning of the cosmos that shapes the world in which we are presently enacting this wholly absurd theater of life.

This Is How We Do It

National myths deliver us as a people into our Promised or Waste Land, exactly as we load them with our intentions: passengers into life boats, or kittens into burlap sacks? Our myths, our shared narratives, are as indispensable as a mother's womb.

Benign or malign, either way we're getting taken for a ride. As Americans, we need to direct our own passage, but we aren't educated and socialized to be self-sovereign citizens. Instead, we're taught to be loyal subjects, fans, of a political master of a mechanical universe; to shut up and do as we're told; to demonstrate our loyalty by our fervor when presented with patriotic symbols. The Big Man Upstairs Knows Best.

One of the PENS task force members, Dr. Bryant Welch, has been writing about this.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In short, psychology, through its national organization, was positioned to provide a scientific rationale documenting the practical cost of subverting our democratic values and terrorizing our citizenry. The task force made clear it was not just a vague set of liberal values at stake; it was America's ability to function rationally in its hour of peril. America's need for such a voice at that time is now painfully obvious.
[...]
It was not to be. How APA turned psychology away from these humanitarian values is a study in organizational failure and professional disaster for psychology and the APA.
[...]
With that action, the APA rejected the effort by psychological experts in the field to call attention to the psychological cost to America of being turned into a fear-plagued nation under siege. The report was referred to another APA Board and never surfaced again, despite efforts by the task force members to revive it. (Dr. Kimmel and several members of his task force did find an independent publisher for their report, now entitled Collateral Damage: The Psychological Consequences of America's War on Terrorism. Edited by Paul R. Kimmel and Chris E. Stout. Praeger, 2006. http://www.amazon.com/Collateral-Damage-Psychological-Consequences).
From that point forward, it was quite clear that a small number of upper echelon members of the APA Board and APA staff working in conjunction with military psychologists and their colleagues were highly committed to psychologist's continued participation in "enhanced interrogation techniques."
Mario Cuomo famously said, We campaign in poetry; we govern in prose. That is, factual arguments, however well phrased, often fail to move electorates, whereas the power of myth never fails.
For example: we got jacked to war by myths of Iraqi WMDs falling into the hands of 'evil-doers.' The myths *themselves* were the WMDs.
In this way, the power of myth is powering weapons-grade domestic propaganda, thanks to NSA-type fiends at APA.
Thank you for your ongoing work to show the hidden corners of the issues and people involved in Guantanamo and other sites where our society has failed to protect many people who may be totally innocent of the charges against them.
